Kumamoto was hit by massive earthquakes in April. Series of tremors have not ceased yet as of the end of April. Usually Japan is filled with joy this time of year because a week long holiday "Golden Week" starts. This year is different in Japan. We noticed several friends of ours including foreigners went to and now are in Kuamoto as volunteers to help the region out. Onegai Kaeru team wishing the prompt recovery of the region.

Kumamoto is a great travel destination known for Kuamoto ramen, horse meat sashimi and hot spring (Onsen), and many great Sake like Reizan (れいざん), Kouro (こうろ) Bishonen (美少年).

You can expect around 7 hour trip from Tokyo to Kumamoto.

By Train (cheapest if with Japan Rail Pass)

You can expect around 7-10 hour trip from Tokyo to Kumamoto.

If you are foreigner visiting Japan, you can get the Japan Rail Pass BEFORE you come to Japan. The cost shall be much cheaper.

(Note: There is a special JR ticket for some season called Seishun 18 Kippu with which you can take as many JR trains without limited express like bullet train for 24 hours. Onegai Kaeru team used this ticket when little travelling from one side of Japan to the other side of Japan. This shall be the cheapest but season is limited and it takes time. )

By Bus (Cheapest but slowest)

Usually less than 100USD (one way). There is no direct bus from Tokyo to Kumamoto. If travelling from Tokyo, you need to change somewhere in the middle such as Osaka, Kyoto.
