In addition to Kimono, anime goods, Japanese fanclub membership and live tickets, frequent requests from our readers are about Japanese hand craft arts.

Yosegizaiku ("寄木細工") is a type of traditional Japanese craft item which originated during Edo Period (1603-1868).  The beautiful mosaic work comes from the natural fine grains and textures of wood.

Hakone Yosegi Zaiku art, which began in the late Edo period, is a traditional Japanese craft originating from the Hakone and Odawara regions. These areas, known for their abundant wood resources, developed two main types of woodcraft: Hikimono Zaiku, which involves turning wood on a lathe to create items like bowls, and Sashimono Zaiku, which involves assembling wooden boards to create boxes and chests. Together, these crafts are known as Hakone Zaiku.

While Hikimono Zaiku, dating back to the Sengoku period, was particularly popular, Sashimono Zaiku saw a rise in the late Edo period when Mr. Nihei Ishikawa from Hatajuku applied techniques from Shizuoka to develop Hakone Yosegi Zaiku. This technique, suited to Hakone's diverse and abundant wood types, became more prevalent.

Originally, Hakone Zaiku art used traditional Japanese joinery techniques that involved no nails to connect wood pieces. Over time, it evolved to create intricate patterns using Hakone's various woods and to develop complex secret boxes (Himitsu-bako "秘密箱" or puzzle boxes) which you need to solve the puzzle to open where you hide your treasures(!).

Although Hakone wood are no longer allowed to be used due to the area's designation as a national park, craftspeople now use traditional Japanese woods like magnolia, dogwood, zelkova, and cherry to create naturally colored patterns without dyes.

You can see the yosegi art technique in this footage video.

The technique is used to make various items such as trays, chests, jewelry boxes, vases, photo frames, coasters etc. We notice there are several shops which selling yosegi made in India.
