Exhibition halls in Japan are not as big as the ones in Europe or China. The biggest one in Japan is Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo which has 80000 sqm (for the exhibition space it is just above top 70 in the world. )and the second one, Makuhari Messe in Chiba, 7000 sqm. And these halls are not that close to the city center. It is around 1-2 hours by train from the central Tokyo.

 

If you like to exhibit in the middle of the Tokyo city, you can take a look at Tokyo International Forum which is very close to Tokyo central station. Its biggest hall is Hall E with 5000 sqm.

Approach from Uchibori Dori, either from Chidorigafuchi or Takebashi. Note that vehicles cannot enter from Yasukuni Dori (pedestrians only). There is no parking available for visitors at Nippon Budokan.

Take the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, Hanzomon Line, or Toei Shinjuku Line to Kudanshita Station. It is a 5-minute walk from Exit 2. During peak times at Kudanshita Station, use Exit 4. For convenience when leaving, use the pedestrian bridge to access Exits 1 or 3 if the area around the station is crowded.

If you are planning to use Big Sight, you should also consider Makuhari Messe in Chiba. It is almost as big as Big Sight in Tokyo.

Exhibition Halls 9 to 11 feature a distinctive curved roof resembling the waves of Chiba Prefecture's outer and inner bays, serving as a medium-sized international exhibition venue.

 

Access and Amenities

 

Access to other facilities within Makuhari Messe is facilitated through connecting bridges. It is also directly linked to the fountain and lush pedestrian promenade of "Messe Mall," offering the closest access from Kaihin-Makuhari Station.

 

Exhibition Halls 9 to 11, totaling 18,000 square meters, consist of three halls suitable for heavy-duty exhibits. The complex also includes international conference facilities.

The venue is just a 5-minute walk from two major stations: JR Osaka Castle Park Station and Osaka Business Park Subway Station. It's also easily accessible from JR Shin-Osaka Station, a Shinkansen stop, making it convenient for many visitors.

 

 

The venue can accommodate up to 16,000 people with its combined stand and arena seating. This capacity is ideal for large-scale concerts and events, maintaining a sense of intimacy and excitement.

 

 

The area around Osaka Castle Hall provides ample space for 24-hour smooth loading and unloading operations. There is a dedicated parking area with enough space for about 20 large trucks.

This venue features Japan's first retractable roof and is Kyushu's largest all-weather dome, hosting various events. Its circular design evenly supports the movable roof. The dome is 222 meters in diameter, 68 meters high from the field to the roof, and 122 meters from home plate to the outfield wall.

 

The roof has three identical sections, with two that slide open or close in about 20 minutes, making it weatherproof. The 1.7-meter gaps between sections are sealed with inflatable rubber tubes to block rain and wind. The roof opens only when the chance of rain is below 30%, wind speeds at 10 meters above the roof are under 10 meters per second, and the Hawks win. Several times a year, games are played with the roof open on "Roof Open Days."

The 7,000㎡ exhibition hall features a spacious, pillar-free area with a ceiling height of 10 meters. It can be partitioned based on the size of the event and includes an outdoor exhibition area. This makes it versatile for not only exhibitions but also events, shows, and parties. The floor has a load capacity of 5 tons per square meter, accommodating heavy exhibits, and the generously designed loading entrance facilitates efficient setup and teardown. The LED ceiling lighting offers up to approximately 1,000 lux with four adjustable brightness levels.

What is "popup store"? You hear this term a lot in Japan. It is the same meaning as "popup retail". It is a temporal shop only open for some days or some weeks. 

 

In the era of multi channel marketing, the popup store is quite a popular way to launch a foreign brand in Japan, promote new collection of a brand, promote products of online store.

 

The tenant cost is high in the center of big cities in Japan like Tokyo, Osaka. The rent agreement is also not so flexible which results in risk. To leverage this cost, the popup retail has become a quite popular as it can reach the customers easily and promote the brand at a relatively lower cost.

What should you look at and put when you plan to have a popup retail store in Japan?

 

1. you set a goal clearly. What do you want to achieve with this store? Do you want to sell at the store? Or do you want to promote your brand? Without this, your success is not so certain.

 

IF you want to sell, here is a set of golden rules.

1. Low cost item

Unlike an established shop, people usually are not expected to know about the shop or your brand. They are not prepared to pay a lot. If you want to sell, put something reasonably priced.

 

2. Item with an eye catching design

Your item needs to have a quite cool design to get the attention of the people walking by. With the combination of the shop design, your cool looking item will get an attention and people may stop by.

 

3. Seasonal item

If the item is something people can buy anytime, they will wait. If you want to sell from your popup retail shop, you need to make the item seasonal or even the shop-only item where people can only buy from this popup store.

 

4. Item good as a present

You may put the popup store at a location where many people come and go. Some people are just on way to meet their loved ones or friends. If your item is something a person needs to carry all day, the person will pass. If the item is great as a present, like a flower, the person may have a reason to buy from you!
